Mararu - termite nest

Look at the seize of this termite nest! Really quite different than the underground termite nests we have at Bosque Santa Lucia. This one is higher and seems to be of a material harder than nails. As I understand it, the termites live underground. The mound is a deposit of soil excavated by the termites as they dig down further into the ground. The black hole towards the bottom of the nest is an entranceway to what I believe is a wasp nest. See the next image.

Mr.Stevens...the termite mounds here in our tropical Philippines...we used to dig and serve our chickens. Good nutrition for the fowls...chickens eat the termites, not the mound.
