Ant nest, Flona

Adjacent to Belterra is the Tapajós National Forest, where our trail guide, Sr. Francisco showed us some of the wonders of a primary forest. That's him next to one more large ant nest, which was attached to the trunk of a tree. I've seen large nests like this before, but never so close to the ground.

Amazing what small insects are capable of. Just the sheer size (not necessarily the shape), reminds me of the termite hills I saw in South Africa. Do termites build the same sort of structures in South America as they do in Africa? South America has always fascinated me. Thanks.

I'm not familiar with Africa.

Thank you, Steven. I'll have fun researching it. :)
