Spider trap

I spotted this handsome grasshopper caught up in a spider web (top image) and decided to come to the rescue. After releasing it, I looked around for the spider. It took a second for me to realize that I was looking at a spider because it had transformed itself into a neat cube (middle image), which had little resemblance to my expectations of what a spider looks like. After messing with it, it unfolded itself to show some legs and a very comical design on the back (bottom image).

TEMA group visits the Bosque

It was great to see Sr. Hagen, tour coordinator for TEMA, a few days ago. TEMA is a prominent eco-tourism company out of Sweden. Most of their clients are from the Scandinavian countries. They present an Amazonian tour at least four times per year. Bosque Santa Lúcia is one of their stops out of Santarém. Image, Hagen with his favorite pet, the Amazonian pink dolphin.

I assume that this insect is a grasshopper. In this position, it looks like a shrimp.

I've heard of grasshoppers big enough to barbecue. Our friend in the attached image was getting to be that size.

Grasshopper for dinner

I got this shot in the early stage of the spider wrapping up the grasshopper for dinner. Actually, it doesn't take long. When the insect hits the web, the spider descends from its hiding spot up in the leaves and in few seconds the victim is immobile.
