When I took this picture of the butterfly I didn't see the red-headed, long-legged insect next to it. I assume it jumped into the picture just as I pushed the shutter button. Click on the image for an enlargement.
Steven Alexander has been in Santarém since 1979, the year he joined the Fundação Esperança staff. He is recipient of the Padre João Felipe Bettendorf Medal for Distinguished Services to the Municipality of Santarém, an honor conferred to him by the mayor on June 22, 1999—on occasion of the 338th anniversary of the city. In December of the same year he received the title of Honorary Citizen of Santarém, an award presented by the Santarém Chamber of Councilmen/women. Steven graduated from undergraduate school at Berea College, Berea, Kentucky. He did his graduate degree in public health at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He is author of the book, Santarém - Riverboat Town. Steven and his wife, Áurea, are owners of Bosque Santa Lúcia, where they conduct environmental education and eco-tours.
