This colorful beetle seemed to be mired down in water and humidity from an early morning rain.

Tortoise beetle (family Chrysomelidae, subfamily Cassidinae). I've seen video of ants trying to predate these things - they clamp down against the leaf surface with their shell forming a tight seal. The ant's efforts at prying it up were completely futile! regards--ted
